Should Have Stuck with Fruitball

“Parfaits are not meant to look like people we know,” Lea said, poking at his Goofy Parfait with his spoon.

“I’m fine with it,” Kairi said, casually biting one of the Queen Minnie ears off her Royalberry cone. Lea and Ventus exchanged a look. “What?”

“Yikes.” Lea stuck a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth, which at least was coffee and almond flavored. “So, Ven, you brought us here. What’s there to do in this one-horse town?”

“His name’s Horace,” Ventus said. “There’s plenty! We could try Fruitball, or there’s an underground pinball game, but I thought you two would really like Rumble Racing. You’re always fighting over who gets to drive the Gummi ship.”

“Yeah, nobody could beat Lea at Fruitball,” Kairi said, earning a kick from Lea under the table. “So let’s try that racing thing, sure. Winner drives home, no arguments AND no backseating.”

“Winner drives for a week,” Lea amended. “At least make it worth my while to kick you two’s butts.”

“It’s your funeral, grandpa,” Kairi shrugged. She tried to steal one of the wafers out of Lea’s parfait, but Lea whacked her hand with his spoon.

“Perfect!” Ventus said, cheerfully going back to his Double Crunch sundae.

It wasn’t until they were at the racetrack that Kairi and Lea realized they’d been had.

“This isn’t an afternoon off, this is glider practice!” Kairi accused.

Ventus grinned, not at all sorry, already balanced on his own keyblade glider, hovering just off the ground. “Aqua said it’d be good practice for you. Plus, be serious, did you really think we’d get Lea squished into a Disney-sized go kart? His knees would be up to his ears.”

“Ugh, just look at this thing.” Lea gestured to his glider. Regularly his glider was all slick silver and red, but the Disney Town version, with its rounded edges and cartoony flame decals, looked like a questionable toy ordered from the Moogle mail order catalog. “You’ve ruined a perfectly good glider, you’ve given it anxiety!”

“At least yours has handles,” Kairi said. Hers had turned out like Ventus’s, meant to be balanced on like a surfboard. A very pink, flower-covered surfboard. “Mine looks like the carriage my plastic horses used to pull when I was five.” Kairi hopped up onto it, trying to balance as it leaned left and right. “Whoa, there!”

“You’re fine, you’re fine,” Ventus encouraged easily. He swung his own glider around with the ease of practice, kicking towards the start line. “Come on, race is about to start. Last one to the finish line is a Popcat!”

Lea dropped onto his own glider and feeling for the foot rests. At least when he twisted the handles forward, the glider revved satisfyingly. “Ready, princess?”

“Born ready,” Kairi retorted, kicking off and wobbling past Lea until she got some momentum going. “Eat my dust, Popcat!”

“Shoulda stuck with Fruitball,” Lea muttered, taking off to chase after her. Still, it wasn’t all bad: maybe if he came in first, he’d get an ice cream shaped like his face. “Ready or not, here I come!”
