Spider Job

“Don’t want to hurt him,” Lea explained, distracted trying to keep the spider in the cup while trying to elbow open the glass sliding door to Roxas and Xion’s tiny apartment porch. “He’s just doing his job.”

“Spiders have jobs?” Roxas asked, tilting his head as he reached past Lea to yank the door open. After only a few months of real life experience, both Roxas and Xion had learned to question anything Lea told them as true or him messing with them. Roxas glanced over his shoulder at Ventus, who was keeping a safe distance with the couch between him and the spider.

Not that Ventus was any help, since he arguably had even less regular experience than anybody besides Namine.

“We don’t have bugs in the Land of Departure,” Ventus said, expression wary. “Are spiders the ones with lots of legs or the ones with way too many legs?”

“His JOB,” Lea interrupted, still trying to shake the stubborn spider out of the cup without flinging him back inside, “is to eat other bugs we don’t like at all, like fruit flies and mosquitoes! Which we’d have a lot less of if you didn’t keep leaving all the windows open.”

“I like the outside,” Roxas commented. He’d spent most of his time in the Organization in the sterile Castle that Never Was, and DiZ sure hadn’t bothered to code any unnecessary smells or sounds or bugs into the digital Twilight Town. He and Xion spent a lot of time in the dwindling days of summer sitting on the porch, marveling at all the sounds Twilight Town made. “It smells nice.”

“I mean, that’s fair, but…” Lea looked down at the spider, no perched on the lip of the cup, giving him a baleful look. “Listen, buddy, don’t make that face at me. I’m not the one too dumb not to drop on unsuspecting wielders in the shower.”

“Maybe he thought you were a bug,” Roxas teased. He pinched Lea’s bare forearm hard enough to make him jump. “To eat!”

“Ambitious of him.” Lea tapped the cup on the porch railing, and the spider reluctantly shuffled onto more stable ground. “There, eat anything out here that you want, you can be the porch bouncer.”

“Ok, that one’s fake!” Roxas called out Lea, watching curiously as the spider scuttled along the underside of the railing and then back up again. “Spiders don’t bounce, for sure.”

“No, a bouncer, a—” Lea rolled his eyes skyward. “Never mind, geez. That’s enough bug time for me! Get out of my way so I can finally take my shower and we can go on this mission already. You and Ven can sit out here and sniff the city or whatever it is kids are into these days.”

“We will, thanks!” Roxas retorted, staying right where he was and forcing Lea to squeeze-shuffle past him in the doorway. “Hey, where are we going anyway?”

“Somewhere called Ant Island,” Ventus reported. He frowned. “Do you think they have spiders there?”

“I’m sure it’s fine.” Roxas shrugged.

“Oh, come on!” Lea’s voice echoed out from the bathroom. “Who let you in here?!”
