Two of a Kind
“Much longer than that,” Aqua said, slapping Sora’s hand down from the handle of the oven door. “If you let the steam out, the bread won’t get crusty. Be patient.”
“Why’s every lesson about patience?” Sora crabbed, pulling himself onto the stool beside Aqua and flopping down on the counter. “I could work on observation! Or creative thinking! But nooooo it’s always patience.”
“Riku hasn’t called yet, I take it?” Aqua asked, turning a page in her novel. Sora grumbled something indistinct. “He did say they might stop by Atlantica. He’d have had to leave his Gummi phone on the ship.”
“He’s probably too busy having fun with his favorite mission buddy.” Sora made a face.
“Sora,” Aqua scolded. Sora slumped, immediately guilty, and Aqua’s tone softened. “I know you feel left out because you aren’t cleared for missions yet, but you can’t say anything like that in front of Ven, all right? He’d be really hurt.”
“I know,” Sora said, crossing his arms and resting his cheek on them. “It’s not like I don’t want them to be friends. It’s dumb to be jealous.”
“It’s not dumb. You never had to share his attention before, right? From what he’s told me, it sounds like he didn’t feel close to anyone else on your island.” Aqua drummed her fingers on the table. “That’s how Ven is, too. It’s hard to connect with him, sometimes even for Terra and me. Riku’s the first good friend he’s made close to his own age. I know you wouldn’t make him feel bad about that on purpose, but just…it’s touchy. Ok?”
“Ok,” Sora agreed. Aqua ruffled his hair.
“Tell it to Riku all you want, though, he thinks it’s cute when you’re jealous,” Aqua said, going back to her novel.
“Aqua!” Sora protested, cheeks warming up.
He still felt subdued by the time Riku and Ventus were back, but he pasted on a bright smile during dinner and asked for all the details of their mission. He caught Riku side-eyeing him a few times, but Sora was reasonably sure that if he sounded weird, it would be easy to chalk it up to jealousy of being allowed to go on missions at all.
Sora prided himself on a job well done holding it together until they were back in their room. He gave Riku roughly thirty seconds to sit down and untie his boots before crawling into Riku’s lap in a transparent demand for attention.

“Ok, ok,” Riku said, arms around Sora’s back. Sora pressed his face into the side of Riku’s neck, smelling the salt dried in his hair. Even if the ocean had been Atlantica, it still smelled like home. “Sorry. I should have called.”
“It’s ok.” Sora took a deep breath, then another, the tension across his shoulders relaxing. “Wasn’t mad. Just jealous.”
“Of going out to worlds?” Riku asked. He slid one hand up into Sora’s hair, winding fingers in the length of it. “Are you ever going to cut this?”
“No.” Sora’s eyes fluttered half-closed as Riku reached up with both hand and combed Sora’s hair back from his face into a very silly ponytail. Riku held it with one hand while he hunted for a hair elastic in his pocket. “You like it.”
“It’s sticking out all over,” Riku laughed.
“Not my hair.” Sora lifted his head to look at Riku’s face. “You like it when I’m jealous.”
Riku brushed their noses together. “I like having all your attention focused on me. I guess that’s not very nice.”
Sora hummed at the press of Riku’s lips against his forehead. “That makes two of us.”
