Know It All

“A smirk?” Roxas echoed, looking up from his Gummi phone. “It’s like a cross between a spoon and a fork.”

“Is it?” Xion frowned at the book in her hands. Roxas took a better look at the cover, but he didn’t take much from it other than the title was very pink and sparkly and the guy on the cover wasn’t wearing nearly enough of a shirt. Olette had given Xion a tote bag full of paperbacks to give light reading a try, but most of the covers were like that and Roxas was starting to have a lot of questions about what kind of books they were. Xion was rereading a sentence, eyes tracking back and forth. “I don’t think that’s…right.”

“Sure it is. Axel!” Roxas leaned his head back over the arm of the couch, looking into their kitchen. “A smirk’s like a spoon and a fork, right?”

“What?” Lea called back.

“A smirk!” Roxas hollered louder. “They come with the takeout!”

Lea appeared in the kitchen doorway, flour smudged all over his T-shirt, face, and arms. He looked down at Roxas, lounging around. “What are you talking about?”

“The spoonforks,” Roxas repeated, as if Lea was the idiot. “Those are called smirks, right?”

“SPORKS,” Lea corrected. “A spoon and a fork together are called a spork. A smirk is a thing you do with your face, you know.” Roxas and Xion both stared at him. “You know. Roxas does it all the time! It’s like a smile but sneaky. Or sharp.”

“So it’s one of your made-up words,” Roxas summarized, satisfied.

“It is not! I didn’t make up the word smirk!” Lea protested, running a hand through his hair and getting flour in that too.

“Aw, I like your made-up words,” Xion assured, smiling sweetly. “They’re cute! I like trivet.”

“I like knickknack,” Roxas said.

“I AM NOT MAKING UP WORDS!” Lea yelled, hands on his hips. “Geez, sometimes you guys make me so smad.”
