Lost and Found

Right where it was, right where it belonged, those two things should have been the same. They weren’t, though, making Tamamori frown as he checked his pockets for the third time. When he still turned up nothing, he began to worry in earnest. He tried to think back, the last time he’d had it was…when he’d left the house? Did it have it on the train? When he got to work? Maybe just in the hallway, outside, before he got too panicked, he’d just go look around out in the–

“Looking for something?” Miyata asked behind Tamamori, making Tamamori jump half a meter when Miyata’s breath brushed the back of his neck. Tamamori whirled to yell, then froze when he saw that Miyata was holding up a plain, gold ring.

“You found it!” Tamamori threw his arms around Miyata’s shoulders and squeezed him tight, forgetting all about his irritation under the wash of relief.

“Maybe you should be more careful with this thing,” Miyata teased, never one to turn down affection from Tamamori. “How else will people know you belong to me?”

“Idiot, they aren’t supposed to know!” Tamamori gave Miyata a little shove back. “Otherwise I’d just wear it and then we wouldn’t have this problem.” Tamamori reached for his ring, frowning when Miyata refused to let go right away.

“You should totally wear it,” Miyata said, talking over Tamamori’s protest, “just not on your finger.” He opened his hand to reveal that Tamamori’s ring was threading onto a gold chain, long enough to let it hang down into his shirt no matter how low-cut, and strong enough that he wouldn’t have to worry about it breaking. “You didn’t lose it; I just borrowed it a bit.”

“Moron!” Tamamori hissed, grinning and cheeks turning pink even as he punched Miyata hard in the arm. “You made me worry for nothing!”

“I’m glad to hear you were worried, since you sure weren’t that happy about waking up with that on your finger.”

“I was hungover, geez,” Tamamori tsked, putting the loop of the chain over his head, and fiddling with the drape of it over his chest. “I should have thrown up right on you, serve you right.” Tamamori noticed suddenly the new chain around Miyata’s neck, just visible before it slipped under his collar.

Miyata hooked a finger in the chain when he noticed Tamamori looking and tugged it out of his shirt to show the matching gold ring dangling from it. “I did say in sickness and in health.”

Tamamori rolled his eyes, but didn’t fight too hard when Miyata leaned in to claim a kiss. “Mm, well I guess I’m stuck with you after all. For better or worse.”
