Taking Shelter
“I’m not going in there,” Nikaido balks when they near the deserted, run-down shrine. The sliding door is slightly ajar, the rice paper of the panels peeling and torn.
“Nika, it’s pouring!” Senga drags Nikaido along relentlessly, both of them already soaked. So much for reliving their youth by hunting for stag beetles out near Nikaido’s house. They’d barely found so much as a butterfly before the thunderstorm had hit.
Nikaido was digging his heels in, but it wasn’t having much effect on the slick grass. “Kenpi! It’s totally haunted, look at it!” Was he imagining things, or had the door just slid open a little wider? “Kenpi!”
“Aw, just go already!” Senga gave one last pull and yanked Nikaido inside with a yelp.
Inside the dim light and the drumming of the rain on the roof only magnified Nikaido’s unease. At least he could blame his shivers on the rain still dripping down his neck off the ends of his hair.
At least until a crack of thunder made him shriek out loud.
“Don’t worry so much,” Senga coaxed, pulling Nikaido close by the soaked shirt and rubbing his hands up and down Nikaido’s chilled arms. “I could distract you…”
“I think that’s a bloodstain on the floor,” Nikaido interrupted, making Senga roll his eyes.
“Or the roof leaks because this place is five hundred years old.” Senga pressed even closer.
“Yeah, but did you just hear…” Nikaido never finished his sentence because Senga was pressing their mouths together, murmuring something about wet clothes, hands already pulling at Nikaido’s shirt.
And any ghosts that did come out on that dark and rainy afternoon glided right back the way they had come when they caught sight of the shameless acts going on right on the (now even more stained) shrine floor.
