Author’s Notes: since I’m not going to Japan this summer, I would just about kill somebody for a sour plum onigiri, which is my favorite summer flavor.

Umeboshi

For most, summer starts with heat or cicadas. For Masuda, summer starts later. For Masuda, it isn’t summer until his favorite summer flavor appears.

“Summer yet?” Yamapi asks when they meet at the station. Masuda shakes his head sadly. “Let’s try this one.” Yamapi shoves Masuda into the kiosk on the platform. “Maybe summer’s in here.”

They look with no success, before Yamapi spots purple labels. A gasp from Masuda means he’s seen too. Masuda is paying the clerk before Yamapi can blink.

Outside, Yamapi unwraps his own onigiri. “So now it’s summer?”

Masuda’s mouth is too full to answer.
