Remus Lupin, Heartbreaker
“Lily?” Remus stopped beside Lily’s seat at dinner. “Can I talk to you about something?”
“Sure, Remus!” Lily stood up from the bench immediately and kissed Remus’ cheek, taking his hand and waving cheerfully to her friends as they left the Great Hall. “Is it Prefect related?” she asked.
“Er, no,” Remus answered.
“Good,” Lily grinned, “I was hoping that you were just making up an excuse to sneak off and snog.”
“Unfortunately I wasn’t,” Remus refused to meet her eyes. “I really do have something to talk to you about.”
“Oh,” Lily’s walk slowed a bit. “This doesn’t sound very good.”
“It’s not,” Remus said apologetically. “We shouldn’t do this in the hall…”
“You’re breaking up with me, aren’t you?” Lily asked, pulling her hand out of Remus’.
“I…” Remus glanced up at Lily, then back down at the floor. “Yes.”
“I knew it,” Lily sighed. “I knew it was too good to be true. Neat, polite, conscientious,… obviously you’re gay.”
“What?” Remus looked up, startled.
“Completely gay,” Lily shook her head. “I thought maybe I could bring you over from the dark side…stupid of me, I know.”
“Now just hold on a minute!” Remus spluttered. “I am not…”
“Moony, there you are!” Sirius called, coming around the corner. “Been looking for you everywhere, want to go to dinner?” Sirius glanced dismissively at Lily. “Oh, hello, Evans. Dinner, then, Remus?”
“I’ll meet you in a minute, Sirius,” Remus said. “Save me a seat?”
Sirius grinned and ruffled Remus’ hair before strolling off down the hall. Remus reached up and straightened his hair with a grin that died on his lips when he looked back over at Lily’s thundercloud expression.
“I’m sorry,” Lily said acidly, “were you just about to say that you were not gay?”
“I’m not,” Remus sighed, letting his hands drop. “It’s not all boys…”
“Did it have to be him?” Lily pleaded. “You could’ve picked anybody else, any other boy in the whole school, and I would’ve understood but why did it have to be him?!”
“It’s only ever been him, Lils,” Remus said quietly. “It’s always been him.”
“Don’t call me that,” Lily ordered, blinking tear-bright eyes angrily to keep them from spilling over. “You can’t call me that any more!”
Lily fled the hallway, leaving a stunned Remus standing alone, and didn’t stop running until she reached her room.
After a good cry, Lily Evans laid silently on her bed and pondered the depths of her hatred for Sirius Black. She was going to get her revenge on him, and it was going to hurt, or her name wasn’t Lily Evans. Sirius Black had teased her and menaced her and baited her and made her tenure as a Prefect nigh unbearable, but that wasn’t enough for him, now he had stolen her boyfriend and that was the last straw.
A cruel smile curved Lily’s lips as she realized what she had to do. He’d stolen her boyfriend; she’d steal his best friend.
“I’m going to steal James Potter,” she said out loud to make the vow more real. “And there’s nothing Sirius Black can do to stop it.”
